to shave or not to shave?

Laura here.

My husband has a beard. He's had it since November. At first, I didn't like it. But as it grew, so did my appreciation for it. It still feels funny when I kiss him but I've grown accustomed to that as well. I think Joe looks a little older and more mature with it and I'm sure he thinks that helps establish him a bit more in his profession.

Joe asked me today if he should continue to sport the beard. Truthfully, I like him with it and without it. (Aren't I a good wife?) So I need your help. Let me know if you think Joe should shave it off or keep it. Not that you really care either way but hey, we've got nothing better to blog about so...

beard or no beard?

no beard is definitely the youthful look...i'm usually not one for facial hair. especially if it interferes with me smooching my husband :) but, i really think you are blessed with the capability of going either way. i'm so happy that ira is doing as well as he's doing! i've been following you for a while (can't remember if i've commented or not before). i'm an occupational therapist, by the way. thanks for keeping us updated on life in the big city!!! how's sophia doing?!? she will be such a special mother and wife one day for having ira as a brother!!!

Keith has been sporting a goatee for about 6 months and I like it - he does look older, etc. which is a good thing at this stage of life/ministry. While the babyface look may be more "kissable" I am strongly advocating that Keith keep the facial hair - and so to be consistent I vote KEEP THE BEARD for Joe as well!!!

can you believe after all this time, i am finally posting a comment on Joe's blog?! it must be the insomnia i am experiencing at the moment. anyways, I was obviously moved to respond by the beard or no-beard post. this is how i see it....i am a fan of matt damon and i have always thought that Joe resembled Matt Damon as long as he is without the beard. so i say lose the beard and stay youthful while you can. but Joe, you are one of the lucky ones, you can sport either one. good luck with your decision.

With those bedroom eyes, that nice hair, perfect teeth and a square jaw like that, he can shave or not shave and it don't matter.

I'm married, I promise.

Her name is Allison.

Why not enjoy the best of BOTH worlds...beard during the cold months and clean-shaven during the hot ones? (Growing up in New Hampshire, we noticed the men of our village grew their beards out during "Deer Camp" season. They usually shaved around Easter...lol.)

Ooh, it would be kind of like having TWO husbands a year...Mr. Smooth & Mr. Grizzly!

Keep the beard. Definitely. Choose the "manly" look over the "youthful" look.

Besides, it's biblical! See II Samuel 10:5, or Isaiah 15:1-2. It's a disgrace to a man to shave off his beard.

Have we fully considered all our options? Beard or no beard? What about just really long sideburns? Mutton chops? Goatee? Mustache, only? LOTS of options! If you're going to take the razor out, may as well have some fun. Just take a little off at a time and see what you like, don't like.

Make sure the kids are aware - I remember my sister crying when my dad shaved off his beard. She didn't recognize him and got scared.

I cried when my dad shaved off his moustache - he had it all my life and he shaved when I was 6. He hasn't had one since - and I think everyone in my family is grateful =) I'm not a facial hair fan - a little scruff is one thing. I think Kenny having a friend with a beard is only going to work against my efforts to keep him clean shaven - so I vote for a shave!

you are right Laura....either way works for Joe.

I would echo the comments about keeping the kids in the loop, though. My dad shaved off his beard for the first time in her life when my little sister was 2 -- he had her in the bathroom with him while he was shaving so she would know who he was.....

I'm all about change.

No Beard!

You can always grow it back later when change is needed.

Maybe Joe would consider trimming it up a bit for the summer. My husband has had a full beard, went back to clean-shaven, then to a goatee because our daughter asked him to. It's nice. She told him he could shave it off if he wants, but it really looks good, so I convinced him to keep it. A goatee is kind of a year-round look.

Dad's always had a mustache, and has done the beard off and on. I like the beard and wouldn't even know him without the 'stache. I think he told me once that he read somewhere that men with beards aren't trusted as readily as men without, so he shaved it when he first went into ministry...

but I vote you keep it anyhow.

Laura,
I'm gonna shamelessly steal this blog entry and post it on mine - with photos of Darren. He grew a beard last summer, and has kept it because I love it so much! It drives him crazy, but I keep talking him into keeping it. I think I'll post a poll on my blog and see what the general public thinks. LOL!

As for Joe - I wanna see him with a goatee. :)

i'm pro-beard. it makes you look like a guy i'd have a beer with more than a guy who'd model for the gap. or the beard makes you look like somebody's dad and no beard makes you look like somebody's boyfriend.

seriously, the beard looks good.
