confessions

For those of you who hold high standards with regard to the cinema you'll be disappointed to know that Laura and I sometimes take in so-called chick flicks. You might even be more disappointed that we sometimes like these low-brow attempts at film.

I'll understand if this is reason enough for you to discontinue reading my blog but until you've curled up on the couch on a rainy day and plopped in Sleepless in Seattle with a tub of popcorn then don't be so quick to knock it. Got it?

For those of you who share in this confession with me let's discuss the following: What is the best chick flick out there? Who would you want to see (of our current Hollywood folk) come together to make a chick flick? And finally, surely there's a better name we can call this genre of film. After all, I'm not the only guy who can appreciate them. Am I? Please? Anyone?

Please tell me that you've seen "Love Actually". If not, you must RUN to the store and rent it! Sleepless in Seatle is also one of my very favorites and you can't forget "My Best Friend's Wedding" or "Notting Hill". So, yes, I am a chick flick fan. :)

OK - that's funny - I didn't read the prior posts - seems YGM is a big hit for this forum.

I'll be the dissenting voice -- didn't care for You've Got Mail at all.

But all embarass myself twice -- Notting Hill (does that count as a Chick Flick because of the Spike character?) and Bridget Jones. I couldn't relate to Jones' struggles, but I thought the writing was hilarious and Zellweger was great.

Now, I'm going to go crush a can on my head and watch NASCAR or something.

Steel Magnolias. That movie has some of the FUNNIEST dialogue ever written. The Shirley McClaine character CRACKS ME UP. Olympia Dukakis's character, too. The scene towards the end of the movie, when Sally Field is beside herself with grief... and the audience is choking back tears... and then all of a sudden, you're wiping tears from your eyes, but not 'cause you're CRYING. It's because you're laughing so hard.... ah. Good flick.

I think the best chick flick is Hope Floats. I love the story and romance there.

Joe,

You're not alone.

When Sara and I watch chick flicks, I'm the one more likely to shed a tear. (Secretly, of course).

I always enjoy Fried Green Tomatoes. But let's keep that between you and me.

I am a sucker for the movie musical. The Sound of Music, West Side Story, RENT, A Chorus Line, Chicago, Moulin Rouge. If only it were actually acceptable to break into song at any given moment....

Yes, my Jim loves himself a good chick flick. I always know when he is "secretly" blubbering. :) Father of the Bride always chokes me up.

I'm going to go with Steel Magnolias as my favorite of the chick flicks. I, too, will never let my personal tragedy interfere with my ability to do great hair.

Who I'd like to see come together in a movie? Gael Garcia Bernal and America Ferrera.

I've always felt like the term "chick flick" was applied badly or too broadly. If "chick flick" means a movie that is all sweeping violins and no substance (Sleepless In Seattle...more on this in a bit) or absurd stretches of the imagination (Bed of Roses), then I don't go in for the "chick flick". But some people apply the term to any romantic comedy (When Harry Met Sally, Love Actually) which, to me, are just well told basically believable romances. By the first standard, I have no favorite. By the second, I'd say When Harry Met Sally.

But back to Sleepless In Seattle. My biggest problem with this film is that it is considered to be romantic. It's about two people who never meet until the very end, and yet are somehow in love. It's kismet and it's love at first sight and it's so much less than what real love is and so much more than what anyone should be shooting for that it just makes my stomach kind of queasy. Give me stories where love is about committment as much as passion, about longevity and investment. Those I like.

Okay, so you got me to comment. Joe, I have too many to name, but I will tell you my most current favorite chick flick movie. THE HOLIDAY. Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, Jack Black, and Kate Winslet. The best movie I've seen in awhile. Loved it!

You've got to include "Something New." Also "Chocolate" with Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche.

I personally love all things Austenian--Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park, and Emma are all wonderful. (Leroy IS HOOKED on those, let me tell you!)

The Importance of Being Earnest, Much Ado About Nothing, and Bridget Jones are other favorites.

Since we've got somewhat of a British theme going, I'll defer to some of the Stateside "chick flicks" too. I love all the ones mentioned and wanted to add Bed of Roses and Say Anything to the list.

When Harry Met Sally and My Best Friend's Wedding. Does Moulin Rouge count as a chick flick?

Hmmm...another name for a "chick flick"? I've heard them called "date movies."

If I didn't hate intentionally misspelled words, I might suggest "cinema lite." ;-)
