explain to me this

Why, WHY, are people watching Grey's Anatomy? WHY?

and,

Why, WHY, do I cry every time I catch an episode of Extreme Home Makeover? WHY?

I will happily be the first to fight with Joe. I too had preconceived notions about Grey's. But if Joe gave it a chance, like I did once upon a time- he would find that in every episode the show manages to combine smart writing, realistic relationship dynamics (of the romantic, friend and family variety), how people deal with death and sickness, beautiful Seattle vistas, and all the angst people grapple with in their careers. AND, it's the only show I have ever seen on television that seamlessly mixes whites, blacks, Asians, and Hispanics and no one is stereotyped into their role by race, and the storylines ignore race altogether. It's refreshing. And I cry and laugh every episode. I became an addict from the beginning. It's the only "young" tv show my very intellectual 60 year-old mother even watches, and she loves it too. So take that Joe Clyde. And I look forward to the day you tell me I was right.

Joe here.

Let's be clear. I've seen an episode of Grey's - a full episode. In the episode the mistress/adulteress went to the former wife to ask when she knew McDreamy was the one for her. (The mistress was having to choose b/w two men one of who was McDreamy.) The former wife who was cheated on by McDreamy Dude with the mistress put aside her anger and animosity and told the mistress the story of when she knew McD was the one. WHAT? Are you kidding me? Ridiculous! Over-the-top! Unbelievable! It was piss poor writing and drama. Like they are going to have a civil conversation over the man whom they both love? C'mon, give me a break!

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to get back to my chick flick with its good quality writing and acting and totally believable storyline!

Grey's Anatomy is more promiscuous than Wilt Chamberlain. The show is mostly absurd.

I never thought Ty Pennington could incite a tear, but Extreme Home Makeover usually gets me too. Very touching.

But, again, let's keep that between you and me.

Oh the hate. Sometimes Grey's is over-the-top (please, do not tune in for your test run during this horrible three-part drama fest. One might mistake this hospital for "ER" with all of the stupid plot lines, etc.), but usually the writing is great. Entertainment Weekly had the list of 2006's best lines on TV (many from the Daily Show) -- Grey's had several zingers.

I watched the pilot for Grey's and instantly was hooked -- liked the characters and liked the dialogue (usually). The creator says she takes pride in creating a flawed charcter (Meredith) who can come off a bit obnoxious at times, but isn't perfect. I like it.

if this show has realistic relationship dynamics, then we need to redefine realistic.

i cry on every episode of extreme home makeover. the only reality tv or makeover show that isn't soul sucking.

I've watched two episodes of this show with my wife. The amoral nature of the show aside, the characters are annoying and the writing is pithy.

I've only seen two full episodes of the other... cried both times. I hate crying, but like this show.

I came into Grey's Anatomy very late after hearing all of my friends go on and on about it. And I have to confess, I've been sucked in. It is what I did on both Thursday and Friday nights this week. It is sometimes a bit much, and my friend who is a writer for TV hates it with the white hot passion of a thousand suns (her words), but I can't help myself. But really, if I could watch only one show for the rest of my life, it would maybe be Extreme Makeover Home Edition. It is spectacular. And so worthwhile.

I'm on the fence, Joe, and it's because of all the reasons you named (or implied). I started watching Grey's from the beginning episode, and I really like the intelligently written banter of some of the characters. I don't think there's anything realistic about the relationships, though. I do think over-stressed employees might identify with how these characters get treated as "interns," though.

I'm quitting the show because it's just gotten out-of-control with the melodrama and the decline in good writing. I've decided I have better things to do with my time.

The commercials for EHM make me tear up, so I don't even watch the show.
