seuss or keats?

Every Tuesday night during the month of July our little neighborhood garden is teeming with moms, dads and kids. That's because every Tuesday night stories are read and lemonade and cookies are offered. It's a fun time and a great way to socialize with the neighborhood folk. This Tuesday, I'm one of the readers.

While we have a vast collection of books at our house I'm at a loss as to what I should read. And that's where you come in: Any suggestions?

I'm guessing that the books can't be too long as most of the children are pre-school or early elementary aged. I've been encouraged to bring props if need be like puppets or musical instruments. And the pictures should be lively.

Any thoughts?

"How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?" by Jane Yolen

"King Bidgood's in the Bathtub" (and he won't get out!)
by Audrey and Don Wood

These are our girls favorite books.

And Houston is insisting that I recommend "Some Dogs Do" by Jez Albrorough

I just love the idea of neighborhood story time!! Wish we could sit on a blanket in the park, sip lemonade and hear you read on Tuesday night. Have fun!

Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems. So funny and preschoolers will squeal with delight answering the Pigeon's questions.

Some of Eric Carle's books are sort of like puppets themselves--"The Very Hungry Caterpillar," and "The Very Quiet Cricket." Also, "From Head to Toe" is great because kids love it and they act out the different animals. So cute!

"Madlenka" by Peter Sis would be a great one for kids living in NYC because it's all about a little girl who explores her city block and finds out about her diverse neighbors.

Also, "Julius, the Baby of the World" by Kevin Henkes is another one of my favorites.

Sounds like a really fun evening!

Depends.

Do you want to give them a taste of good young children's literature, or do you want to be liked and revered by everyone for being the best and funniest reader?

Call your local library. Ask for a recommendation. They do read-alouds all the time. The possibilities are endless! Have fun!!

Only in July? What an awesome neighboring time!

I would go with "Dogzilla" or "Katkong" by Dav Pilkey if you want to please the boys -- a little scary and a lot funny.

I agree with the comment about The Very Hungry Caterpillar and From Head to Toe, which I call the "gorilla book." I also love The Little Red Caboose by Marian Potter and Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. My little buddies love these books, too.

"Is Your Mamma a Llama?" is a great one. Very short and better for younger one's with short attention spans.

Have fun!

I went to an authority, my Mom who was an elementary school teacher for years and years now manages at Borders and these are her suggestions:
Any books by Giles Andreae ("Dinosaurs Galore", "Rumble in the Jungle", "Commotion in the Ocean") They are written in rhyme and have GREAT pictures!!
"The Remarkable Farkle McBride" by John Lithgow. Mom says you would have to practice reading this one, but it's wonderful!
There is also "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" by Judith Viorst and Ray Cruz

I love this idea, good for your neighborhood! Have a great time!!!

I agree...Our girls love How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight and also How Do Dinosaurs Eat their Food?

You could demonstrate sticking beans up your nose like the dinosaur! Moms might not appreciate it but it would be funny!

Clare was given a book titled, Click, Clack, Moo, Cows That Type which won a Caldecott for the illustrations. The story is about cows and chickens who go on strike because they want electric blankets from Farmer Brown...

Viva la resistance!
