It was Wednesday morning. Laura and I were rushing around getting ready for the day. I was going to work and Laura was headed to the hospital and a babysitter was on her way over to take care of Sophia.
Laura and I ended up in the bathroom at the same time with Sophia nowhere to be found. Laura left the bathroom and came back a few minutes later to tell me that she found Sophia in our bedroom with our cell phone having a conversation with someone.
Sophia apparently pushed and held the number three which is the speed dial to Ira's nurse. The nurse was quite confused and handed the phone to another nurse saying, "I think this is some kid?!"
The other nurse, Perlita, happens to be a big fan of Sophia's and Sophia is a big fan of hers. So through a series of questions Perlita learned that the kid on the other end of the line was Sophia.
Perlita asked Sophia if she has a baby brother or sister in the hospital. Sophia answered affirmatively saying something about a "baby brudder." "What is your brother's name?" Perlita asked. "Ira!" Perlita knew then that it was Sophia and started talking as if they were old friends.
Laura interrupted the conversation and had a good laugh with Perlita. We later got to the NICU and shared more laughs with many of the nurses on the floor. They were quite impressed with Sophia's phone abilities.
To say the least, it was hard to discipline Sophia because it was so darn cute but we did our best to keep a straight face as we explained to her that the phone is not for children.

Ira had a good Tuesday and Wednesday. Nonthing new to report other than the usual: he's hovering around 30% oxygen, still getting Viagra and on 10 nm of Flolan an hour.
I guess the big news to report is that they have compressed his feedings. He is no longer being continuously fed 24 hours a day. He is starting to eat in regular intervals. This is good. The last couple of nurses really believe Ira could start nippling and being fed through the mouth. Ira's good at sucking on the pacifier and holds his milk down well so it would seem that a natural next step would be to try to feed him orally.
The nurses have pushed the doctors on this but the doctors didn't take. I really do think it is only a matter of days before the docs give in and we move forward on the feeding.
And I think it would do wonders for Ira if this were the case.

I was thinking of you guys this morning, as I was leaving for work, walking past my Yankee hat. I'm glad I got it. You kids rock. I love how our kids learn by watching us. Sometimes thats a scary thought though. Like when they grab your cheeks in the middle of church, and yell at you "Look at me!!!"
I love you guys. And pray for you continuously. Theres not a prayer that goes by in the Eller house that we aren't reminded by Blakely to "pray for the babies". She wants Ira to go home with her family.... so do we.

Great story. Some of my favorite phone conversations are with my 3 yr old neice.
I continue to pray for Ira and have faith that he will continue to improve. God Bless your family.
We have been faithfully praying for you all and have been watching Ira's progress daily. I hope that he will get the doctor's consent soon to nurse. As I nurse my eight month old daughter Eszter there is nothing that brings contentment more to her then her nursing time. I am sure that Laura can't wait for this precious bonding time as well.
I wanted to tell you all that I admire both of you and your faithfullness to the Lord. Thank you for sharing your daily insights and struggles with us through your writing.
In Christ's love,

I've been following your journey with Baby Ira through connections with the Manhattan and Brookline churches. I know I'm a little late with this, but there are two songs that have been particularly meaningful to me during times of struggle, and I didn't see them suggested anywhere:
"I Still Believe" by Jeremy Camp
"Blessed Be Your Name" by Tree63
So good to know that someone else has a difficult time not adding that second name, Joe...! Your daily blogs have been especially meaningful the past couple of weeks because we have all felt the "ups and downs" of what you are going through--and, then again, we really have no idea just how difficult the road is that you are traveling right now. Still I read daily--laugh with you, cry with you and just wish, like so many, that there was something I could do to help you through this. The pictures of Ira are simply beautiful--especially those where he is staring so intently at his mom and dad whom he so obviously adores.
Laura, do wish someone had an answer to your questions--questions we have all asked for the past few months and trying so hard to understand why there are no answers. I 'stand amazed' at how incredibly steadfast you have remained in your faith.
Ira remains in our thoughts constantly and we are praying that he will be home with you soon. Love you all so much! Aunt Jackie
