you decide
I'm extremely thankful for all the comments and encouragement you offered me in my confessional post. I really do have much to learn and I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.
Easter weekend was packed with church stuff and Laura's birthday. It's Sunday night and I'm pooped. When bloggers get stumped and are tired they often turn to the open thread for help. This is where you come in.
Ask any question you want and I'll do my best to answer it. Any question. Nothing is off limits...well, if it's vulgar then it's off limits but anything else is good to go. So go for it. Anything. C'mon.

Ah Brandon, if I had the answer to that question I wouldn't have had to do all those years of therapy to get over our senior year basketball woes! Good question, my friend. He should have stuck to his guns. But alas, he didn't and Post had their way with us. Sigh...
Not wanting to dominate the theme here, but do you think Turgeon (assuming he's the guy) can continue the momentum Gillespie generated or will we now return to the horrible years that preceeded him?
Richie, another really good question. The answer for that is "NO!" I'm sorry, Aggie Basketball fans, but losing BCG was the equivalent of Good Friday but with no Resurrection Sunday in sight. Okay, so that's a bit extreme but no coach will be able to come in and give this program the singular devotion BCG did. No coach.
And Brandon, funny how I interpreted your question through the lenses of our high school bball squad. Now I'm certain you meant Gillespie. So sorry. I have to admit, can't blame BCG (Billy Clyde Gillespie) for moving to Kentucky. Can't blame him at all.
What's the best show on TV that depicts an authentic view of living in THE city? Are there any?
beaner, the answer to that is easy: LOST. Kidding. Hands down it's got to be Seinfeld. I now get jokes watching Seinfeld that I never got before. However, an untrue part of the show is that Seinfeld lived in the same apartment all those years. New Yorkers move around extensively always on the search for the best apartment. Seinfeld must have lived in a rent stabilized building!
Any other viewpoints from my city dwelling friends?
How do you answer when someone tells you they no longer believe in God? I'm asking this in all seriousness. This is someone raised in the church, attended a church college, etc. What questions do you even ask?
Where's the best Chinese Food on Manhattan? It wasn't where I at last week for sure?
Jenni, the unbelief your acquaintance is now experiencing is either because of rebellion or a very true theological crisis that has ended in unbelief. (Are there other possibilities? Indifference? etc?) If the cause is rebellion my guess is that person will come back around. If the cause is a true theological crisis then the road back to belief is not so certain. Either way, you are called to the ministry of presence for this acquaintance. Be present first and foremost. That's where you begin. The questions in the midst of conversation will come later and will be natural if your presence has been established.
happytheman, let's defer to others here in the city who have a more sophisticated palate. Laura and I dine at Ollie's quite often (google "Ollie's") and while it receives high marks and is continuously packed I'm quite certain Ollie's doesn't rank at the top of fine dining.
Anyone else care to chime in on that one?
Sorry about your coach! I guess loyalty is not like it used to be. Wait, Ricky B. did not leave TEXAS. Maybe it is only tamu that can't keep a coach. Just ripping you, BCG is a great coach. He should do great at Kentucky. Now the Big 12 has lost 2 coaches. K St. what was up with that 1 yr thing. So on to my question...
If I send your son some Christian gear will you allow him to wear it? I am still freaking out about that hat!!!!!!!!!
Adam...ahem, excuse me, I mean TEXASFAN, if by Christian gear you mean t.u. gear then the answer is positively, absolutely NO! If by Christian gear you mean a tshirt that says "I brake for Jesus!" then the answer is absolutely, positively NO! :)
I agree with you wholeheartedly about Ollie's. Very good food, amusingly terrible service.
I need your address! I got this great t-shirt about 12 reasons I want to got to TEXAS and not tamu that would look great on your son! Come on bro! You gotta come over to the light! You see the light, walk to it, WALK TO IT!!!!
Victoria, I'm convinced you are trying to set me up. However, I'm a sucker so here goes:
Two scriptures in the New Testament say that women should be silent regarding worship and/or teaching. The first comes in 1 Corinthians 14 and second in 1 Timothy 2. Many churches (not just Churches of Christ) hold those scriptures up as the verses that prove that women have no right to lead in any way, shape or form.
In my opinion, that kind of reading or interpretation is way off. There are several directions one could go to make the point that God never intended for women to be subordinates to men and definitely never intended for women to stand idly by while men did all the work of worship.
I'm not going to take the time here to parse out all the different directions one could go but let me just say that my sister is a preacher, I planted a church here in Brooklyn where women and men share leadership and I will never make my home in a church where that is not the case. Why? Because my wife's voice and daughter's voice must be heard for their experience of faith is often more real and more valid than my own. To silence that would be a sin.
Victoria, one more thing: go to www.gal328.org for a ton of papers on why gender justice is needed in the Church of Christ.
totally not trying to set you up and I know many denominations hold this belief as well but I was coming from a school that was CoC where this belief was upheld and it always bothered me. I appreciate your answers and think it is wonderful that your sister is a preacher and that you planted a church where both voices are heard. And wish you had a church in Austin--you always seem to come from a real and honest place and it is refreshing to read.
victoria-
i am the pastor of an austin church plant with (i'd imagine, given what i know of joe and laura and their church plant) many similarities to the brooklyn plant. we'd certainly love to have you come by and visit. you can also check out the website: www.immanuelaustin.com

my question: know how many aggies it takes to change a light bulb?
Ah Jana. There are so many answers to this question such as: One, but he gets three hours credit, blah, blah, blah.
The real question is, What do you call an Aggie after four years of college? THE BOSS
I'm over my limit here, but we'll see if you answer anyway.
Who do you think we'll be the next president of the US? (Not - who do you think it should be, or who would you like to see - just, as of today, looking into your crystal ball, who will it be?)
Richie, I once asked Jon Stewart of The Daily Show this same kind of question. He was wise enough to dodge my question. I, however, am not that wise.
I think if we threw them all onto a voting ballot today, Obama would win. He had a pretty amazing first quarter of fund raising which means people are putting their hope in him. The current Repub noms don't have a chance.
What would be your advice to parents who have children in NICU's in terms of becoming advocates for their child's care? Any definite "do not say this" or "do say this"; or talk with this person and don't bother calling this person, etc. Obviously, every hospital and every situation is different - but I worry that so many parents don't advocate (out of fear or lack of knowledge or too much reliance on a doctor, etc) for their children like you and Laura have done so amazingly well.
Is it too late to ask?
What would the child you once were think of the adult you have become?
:-)
Kate, this is a very difficult question. It took us a while to learn to advocate for Ira. The field of medicine can be so overwhelming and those dictating the shots (doctors) can be intimidating. I witnessed on many occasions frustrated parents who didn't understand all the "doctor speak." The only definite "do say this" is "Can you tell me again what you are saying?" Make 'em clarify and then if you still don't get it, make 'em clarify again. They owe you that.
Barbara, as a child I was pretty certain I would play ball in the NBA. I'm pretty confident that the child I once was would be somewhat shocked at who I've become. I say *somewhat* because I've always gone against the norm so the child-me would not be surprised that I'm living in NYC. But, the child-me would be surprised that I'm in ministry. Whoa! The child-me wanted a wife and kids at a pretty early age so that wouldn't be such a shock but the child-me thought all that would be perfect and ideal. Well...
