3 Generations of Hayses

3 Generations of Hayses

This is the night before surgery. My dad flew in on Thursday night, came straight to the hospital and we handed him Ira. It was a sweet moment.
-------------------
Laura spent the night at the hospital last night. (Notice that I didn't say that Laura slept at the hospital last night.)

Ira started to wake from his deep slumber yesterday afternoon while Laura and I were at the wedding rehearsal. It wasn't a pleasant scene from what we understand.

He makes the face of one crying - a face we've gotten to know well - but he can't be heard because of being intubated.

He's incredibly swollen. They gave him so much fluid during the surgery that he doesn't look like himself.

They're keeping him intubated because they're hoping to get an MRI done but there are no guarantees. We could start working toward extubation today if we weren't holding out for the MRI. In the meantime, we dope him up to keep Ira from extubating himself by pulling out the vent tubes. Laura and I aren't too happy with this but are trying to be patient.

Again, thanks for the prayers, notes, thoughts and encouragement.

I loved the new pictures! As a mother, I especially enjoyed those with Ira looking up at his mother and sister. What a sweet boy!
I will pray specifically today that the MRI can be done soon and he will be extubated without incident.
Thank you once again for sharing.
praying,

Joe and Laura, the pictures of "Granddad Joe" and Ira are just beautiful. Looking at them made me think of the literally hundreds of people who would have loved to have been in Joe's shoes Thursday night cuddling that precious little boy. What better words than what Cara and Michael wrote: "tears, full of hope, and still praying." That's where many of us are now as we try to imagine how difficult the next few days will be and, at the same time, imagine the hope for the future as Ira becomes a healthy boy and a strong man. Rom. 5:5 "And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us." We love you all so much and are humbly reminded daily how much Ira has meant and continues to mean in our lives. Thank you for sharing. Love, Aunt Jackie

Thanks for the further update. I recently helped my daughter (18 months) as she came out of a mild anasthesia. Not fun, and still surely no real comparison. I am sorry. I am still prayerful this will prove to be the watershed surgery!

I am grateful your dad can be there, hopeful there will be lots of moments to smile and enjoy.

I wish I could have been a "fly on the wall" at the wedding you did...your words about committment, weathering stormy times, and allowing grace and space for individual processes must have been very profound.

God bless your weekend,
Beverly McCallon
