It's Monday afternoon. We just finished a feeding session. It wore Ira out and he is fast asleep. Ira is refusing the bottle. He will have none of it. He doesn't mind eating rice cereal from a spoon but 10 cc of that stuff doesn't get you very far so it looks as if Ira will be on a feeding tube for quite some time. Now we have to start thinking about what kind of tube we want Ira to be fed through: a NG tube which is what he has now through the nose or a G tube which is a surgically placed tube? We'll make it through the rest of this week and then have a meeting with Ira's neonatologist about all this.

Laura's mom flies in tomorrow. Not soon enough!

In answer to your question about the feeding tube--
-The G tube aka mickey g button in the nursing world, is quite handy when you don't want to wake him because it goes directly into his stomach. One of the drawbacks are that it could get infected. But for the most part, it is a little easier on little guys, in that it is harder to remove. It is typically not something that they play with because it can be underneath his clothing.

Feeding tubes in the nose get pulled out very easily, which is somewhat distressing at 2 o'clock in the morning and they require a trip back to the hospital to place. I am sure that he is probably tired of having things taped to his face, or in his nose for that matter. These types of feeding tubes typically do not get infected. Most of the time the infections occur on the skin, just because of the wear and tear on the gentle skin of the face.

If I was having to choose- I would go with the Mickey G.

Continuing to pray,
