Ira Update, Kudos, iTunes

Ira's doing well these days. While he is still throwing up more than usual, it's less than what he was this past weekend.

His oral feeding sessions with the feeding specialist are going well. He is taking baby food via a spoon. It takes him forever to swallow a small bite. He just doesn't feel comfortable eating because when one swallows, one has to temporarily hold one's breath. To a kid who doesn't have much breath to begin with this is a frightening prospect.

His sessions with the OT and PT are going good. They are so pleased with his development. He is doing almost everything a five month old should be doing. His neck/head control needs more work and he doesn't like the prone position one bit, thank you very much.

He is doing okay off the CPAP and on the cannula. He works hard but is able to last about two hours off CPAP. We're shooting for four and they will give us the green light to go home.

When Ira's CPAP is off and the cannula on, we're able to see more of him and take him in more completely. It's interesting. He looks much older than he is. He looks like he has already traveled far in this world and seen much. No baby should have to have that kind of look about him or her.

Laura received some boxes of Kudos Chocolate Chip bars yesterday. For those who sent them - you know who you are - Laura says, "yum, yum! Thank you very much!" You made her day.

Finally, I need some help. I've been given a $15 iTunes gift card from my Clemson Alum (booo!) friend. I'm not up to date on the latest and greatest music out there and could use your suggestions as to what I should get. Here are the rules:

1) I'm not a huge fan of Christian music. I hope that doesn't offend folks out there but it's just not my cup of tea. I appreciate it and I understand it's place in the Christian world but I'm personally not a fan.

2) My taste varies. U2 and Coldplay serve me well when I want to contemplate the meaning of life and where the world should be going. When I want to swing, Lyle Lovett serves me best. I work out to Kanye West. When I'm angry and want to bang my head, I pump up Green Day. I like the Shins, White Stripes, Ben Folds...the field is wide open.

3) Finally, I would like to be introduced to really cool music that most people don't know about. My New York friends should have much to say about this as the music scene here is hot but I imagine there are others of you who are in touch as well.

So help a brother out. What are your recommendations?

Not sure if he's on iTunes, but check out Sufjan Stevens... I've really enjoyed the Illinois album.

How do you feel about rock'n'roll? :)

As a 50-something, I have never outgrown it. Still my fave. My own teenagers are hooked on it. (That, and country. Go figure.) My 17 year old son has a huge collection of rock. Some of his favorites are Foreigner, Doobie Brothers, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Journey, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. My 14 year old daughter is into 50's-60's sock-hop music and swing.

No, my kids are not normal. I'm so proud of them!

Let us know what you choose. Inquiring minds want to know...

Bob Slydell "I'll be honest with you, I love his music, I do, I'm a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, it doesn't get any better than when he sings "When a Man Loves a Woman".

My husband is a new Jack Johnson fan-you might enjoy him, too.

Thanks for the news on Ira. We are praying for him and will continue.

There's a band called The Earlies out of the U.K. that has gotten quite a bit of buzz both in Europe and lately in the U.S. They are quite eclectic, somewhat similar to Polyphonic Spree. The band is comprised of two guys from Abilene and two guys from the U.K. who went to England to make an album. "These Were the Earlies" has been named one of the best debut albums in years. Others have called their style "folktronica." If you're interested, Micah P. Hinson and the Gospel of Progress (a tour mate) is another great singer-song writer (from Abilene no less). just my 2 cents...

I have to support the rising number of Jack Johnson suggestions. I've been meaning to recommend his new "Between Dreams" to you guys for weeks. "Banana Pancakes" and "If I Could" seem especially Joe-and-Laura-ish to me.

I also have a closet fanhood of Keane. He's so mellow with such real conversation lyrics that it's like talking to a new friend from the train (or the coffee shop--as my life applies). He's kind of Ben Folds (when they were Five) meets REM.

Lately my Alanis Morrisette acoustic addition has been strong. The acoustic re-released album is so much better than the original, and I like the idea that we serve a God who provides a world where we can say "Everything's is just fine, fine, fine" even though "we haven't got it all figured out just yet."

Happy Listening. . .and do share some of your final choices for those of us who are also interested in new sounds.

Yes to Banana Pancakes...

Yes to Alanis M., but try "Thank You" for a really prayerful experience...

And how about one to make you laugh, Bowling for Soup's "Ohio (Come Back to Texas)"...

Lance got one to play for his dad "Pancho and Lefty", a nostalgic fave.

And I like White Stripes' "Hardest Button to Button" the very best. peace -- Kate

The Killers for something pretty mainstream but good indie-ish rock.

Ani DiFranco "Serpentine" for interesting political rock.

Buena Vista Social Club...it was ecommended to me by the man that sells me chocolate-covered raisins.

And of course...Def Leppard "Pour
Some Sugar on Me". Good for all occasions, including walking down the aisle.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

They are from a town about an hour away from where I grew up, they play a lot of Zulu traditional songs, some spirituals, and sound great. I think it's 8-part harmony. I dunno if you'll like it, but you have to listen to their version of "Nkosi Sikelele" at least once.

Jack Johnson is overratted. He's the Dave Matthews of this generation, which means no guys really like him, just their girlfriends.

Truthfully I have nothing cool to give you. I will suggest something I call "Kool Christian." It's a group called Ollabelle. They started with some graduate students who wanted to study Gospel, so they started to sing it. It grew from there (Brandon knows more about them than I do). They really are good and it's not preachy. One song I recommend is "Get Back Temptation".

Other than that I can't suggest anything else but U2 since that's all I have been listening to since I got the Digital Box Set off of iTunes.

Try the Killers deluxe album of "Hot Fuss". Then there's Franz Ferdinand's new CD coming October 4. Hm, I really enjoy Michael Buble for some jazzy time. And Wilco is fun too.
