Laura's Birthday
Tomorrow, April 8, is Laura's 31st birthday. Sophia and I will go out this afternoon and shop for just the right gift for mom. I conferred with Ira before I left the hospital this morning but his suggestion for a teething ring for Laura seemed a little selfish.
Laura will wake on her birthday to the pleasant sounds of the PICU. Sophia, Kay (Laura's mom), and I will go to the hospital in the morning to greet Laura with our gifts and best smiles. We'll hang with Ira and then eat lunch together at one of the local restaurants.
My oldest sis, Katie, sent Laura the following "Happy Birthday" e-mail:

I hope your birthday has in it a few hours that you can spend doing something that is good for you: sleeping, praying, eating something delicious, holding someone you love. We would love to be there to celebrate with you, in whatever form "celebration" takes these days. I would even make you a cake in the approximate shape of something you like! But please know that distance does not keep us from remembering you daily, hourly in prayer and with much rejoicing for your life exactly as you are living it. Happy Birthday.Well said, Katie. Happy birtday, or Joyous Birthday, meaning amidst all the stuff and busy-ness and time spent elsewhere, I hope the joy in your spirit filters through all that, to enjoy the day of your birth into this world, as Ira and Sophias mom, Joe's precious bride, and our sweet friend.

I don't know you...but I want to be like you. Such strength and gentleness wrapped up in one soul.
Our little family in Texas remembers you each day. We cry out to the Lord for strength, for peace, for healing. We don't understand what you have faced and continue to face daily at all, but we are moved by your honesty as you wrestle with your frustration and grief. We are challenged by your faith that stretches beyond understanding. May the grace of our Lord come and meet you all in that place of questions, tears, brokenness and exhaustion.
A birthday...a day to celebrate years past and look forward to years to come. But we know you do not live in years right now. You live in days, hours, moments. Hey Laura,
This is actually Karsee not Brian. I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday today. I hope you all are having a good lunch and enjoying time with Sophia, Ira and your mom. It was good to talk to you a few weeks ago and I look forward to talking with you again soon. You all are continually in our prayers and thoughts.

The 8th was my birthday, too, though I'm sure I'm way older than your Laura. May her day have been lovely.
