would you dare?

The question is, would you take your child to this concert?

Only in NYC would a children's concert feature a band called Care Bears on Fire. I love this city.

I read about these bands in the Times a few weeks ago. All of the kids in the bands are really young and just awesome musicians. It sounds like great fun.

Here's the myspace page for Care Bears on Fire. Looks like a fun band.

The woman who put this concert together is Sophia's music teacher. Audra has jet black hair, tattoos and piercings. And she rocks!

I read about them in a New York Magazine article (here). This quote sticks out:

In Park Slope, after-school classes are offered at private and public schools, and Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls (an offshoot of Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls in Portland, Oregon) is in its second year. On the syllabus are the classics: Ramones and Clash and Pixies songs that youngish parents revere, and that their offspring have been hearing since birth.

Rather than being cause for rebellion, grown-ups are rock mentors. Several, in the great tradition of Jack Black, have even become coaches, teaching teens and tweens the rudiments of rocking that normally take several alienated years to fumble through. Nowadays, punk isn’t just sanctioned by parents and school teachers; it’s good, clean fun.

Just like parents funnel their kids through sports, cheerleading, drama, band, beauty pageants, etc...parents are funneling their kids through this stuff too. The harm that could be done with the "rock thing" is no less potent than the harm done with the more traditional outlets of expression or activity for children that we are more accustomed to.

The fine line here is when does it stop being cute for children to be mimicking their rock idols, and start to become a concern? Often times parents don't realize when that line is crossed.

Hey Joe, lets take Sophia and Levi down to the Village and all get tattoos...that would be soooo cool :)

Oh, my. I think I was supposed to live in the "Little House" days...

That music is being taught to kids - even in the Jack Black way - is wonderful and commendable!

That said, I think we have to be aware if we are putting our kids on overload. There is an unbelievable number of kids in "stress" centers (psyche wards - I know - my husband works with them in the capacity of hospital chaplain) for kids who have buckled under all the pressure and all the noise. Too much of anything is not good.
