a challenge

Laura and I were able to sneak out of the house last night. We went to see Dreamgirls. I challenge you to name and describe a better scene in cinema than the scene in Dreamgirls when Jennifer Hudson's character, Effie, sings the dramatic And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going.

Go for it. Give it a shot. I challenge you to find a better scene in all, I repeat, all of cinema.

Oh, and by the way, if she doesn't win awards for her role in this movie there should be riots in the streets, people. Riots!

But back to the challenge. Anyone?

Full disclosure, I haven't seen Dreamgirls, and everything I have heard is that the scene you are talking about is great. I did think of some memorable scenes in movies I have seen that might compete.

I wonder how Jennifer Hudson's scene would hold up to Whitney Houston in "The Bodyguard"? Perhaps, as Slate says, it's The Greatest Song Ever Filmed, but not perhaps the best scene in ALL of cinema.

"Dad, wanna have a catch?"

"Say goodbye to Frankie Dad, say goodbye." ?

"Freeeeeedooooommm!"

"They call me Mr. Tibbs!"

"I Love the smell of Napalm in the morning."

"All work and no play makes Jack a very dull boy."

"I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse.

Not from the movies, but I think it counts since Dreamgirls was first a play....
"To Love another person is to see the face of God...."

How about the "Did you see the size of that chicken?" scene from Young Guns? That was pretty good, too.

SNL had that song tonight in the monologue, although, i'm not sure it was exactly what was played in the movie.
Favorite movie quote has to come from Dances with Wolves at the end when Winds in his hair is yelling at his new 'white-eye' friend:
Can't you see you are my friend, can't you see that we'll always be friends..

"you keep thinking butch. that's what you're good at."

"the dog pissed in the picnic basket!"
(ha, sorry, had to put a Chevy line in there)

Like sireller, I saw SNL last night, and if Jake Gyllenhall (sp?) really sang that himself, he did an AMAZING job! The crowd went nuts.

Okay, off the top of my head, some memorable moments in film:

*The surprise ending of Kevin Costner's _No Way Out_ that made the entire audience gasp.

*The scene in _The Color Purple_ when a wayward minister's daughter came down the center aisle of her father's church, singing. (I saw this one in college, and with no tissues in my purse, I had no way to absorb the tears until I took off my sweater, turned it inside out, and cried into it.)

*My brother turned to me during 1991's _JFK_ courtroom scene and asked me if I'd ever heard a quieter audience. You could have heard a pin drop...and that theater was PACKED. (Oh, brother. It looks like I have a thing for KC, but I PROMISE I don't.)

*When Meryl Streep, as Isak Dinesen in _Out of Africa_, dropped to her knees to ask for mercy on the Kikuyu tribe. I cried like a kitten.

Tombstone

Johnny Ringo: "Isn't there anybody who wants to play for blood?"
Doc Holladay: "I'm your huckleberry. That's just my game."

And just about any scene from Tombstone.

dreamgirls was a decent movie, but i have seen some far superior movie scenes. you shouldn't have even gotten me started with this topic, joe :0)

what about these:

~when russell crowe shocks everyone, but especially joaquin phoenix in 'gladiator' by still being alive and well

~the scene by the campfire before the men go off to battle in 'glory'

~when denzel washington is getting beat within an inch of his life in 'glory' but he says nothing~only a tear runs down his cheek (which WASN'T rehearsed by the way, that was REAL EMOTION)

~when celie sees her children for the first time in 'the color purple' and then they cut to Mister in the field with a smile on his face after FINALLy doing something good for her

~william wallace rallying the troops in 'braveheart'

~'titanic' when rose is lying on that door in that freezing water, almost dead, and she hears the faint sound of the whistle. she tries to tell jack that they're going to be saved, but he's already dead...then she says 'i'll never let go'

~'you want the truth, you can't HANDLE the truth!!'

~in 'zoolander' when after derek had been working a hard day in the coal mines with his dad and his brother and they see a commercial that he did as a model. he says 'i was a merMAN {cough, cough} a merMAN'...allright, i just threw that one in for kicks~have a great day!

Nakiainstl - I was waiting for someone to post "You want the truth? You can't HANDLE the truth!" Classic!

Mad4books - Supposedly that WAS Jake singing. I saw that one of the comments said he was close in the running for the lead guy in Moulin Rouge. Who knows if the comment is true, but it sure looked like he was singing.

Fun post, Joe. I'll have to go see that Dreamgirls at some point.

Oh, Zeb. You've managed to do the unthinkable, the impossible, the unheard of! For being a white male who has excelled in life you've managed to back yourself into two different minority camps.

First, you're claim that the scene with Effie is the "worst" scene in all of cinema is certainly of the minority opinion. Sure, it may not be the "best" as I claim but c'mon, it's darn good and theatres around the country erupting in applause back this claim up!

Second, you continue to support Bush in a time when his popularity is shrinking faster than the manliness of a man in frigid cold water!

Brother, good work. Not many white males who have excelled in life can say they are part of the minority! Impressive!

(Friends, I know Zeb well enough to joke with him on this level. Please don't take my rant serious.)
