Republican Rudy? Really?
I try hard not to label myself politically. In my ideal world I would take a little from both parties and some from lesser known parties to create my perfect candidate. Alas, this is not an option. Because I lean left I've voted in that direction in the last several elections.
I'm incredibly interested in the 2008 presidential election. I'm interested to see if the Democrats will say anything of substance. I'm interested to see how the Republican wannabes will react to President Bush's desire to help them in their campaigns. I'm interested to see if a first will occur: a first woman president? a first black president? So much to watch for in 2008. But this has my interest at the current time: Rudy Giuliani just might be our next president.
The polls aren't even close in projected primaries. Giuliani runs roughshod over his fellow Republicans. The questions I have are, Do the Republicans out there know that Giuliani supports gay rights, gun control and is pro-choice? Have they heard about his colorful past with women? Apparently his strength and resolve after 9.11 is so embedded into the consciousness of this country that even Republicans are willing to overlook his "vices." I'm fascinated by this. But, of course, it's early.

If Rudy G really is all those things...maybe the Republican party could lure me back! If not, I say bring on the first. This will be an election of change, so let's change it all the way!
When you say first woman president, do you mean John Edwards? And did you hear Obama in Selma, Alabama talking about the "site of his conception" the other day? Since when does he give a rip about conception?
Down with any candidate who does not protect the unborn. (Jeremiah 1:5, Psalm 139:13-16, Exodus 21:22-25)
Down with Barrack.
Down with Rodham.
Down with Rudy.
Ah, Zeb. If I didn't know you better I would think you were being serious. I mean, defaming someone in one sentence and then getting all self-righteous in the next. :)
By the way, as someone who is unabashedly Republican, are you waiting for another candidate to enter into the race?
What scares me about Rudy is the idea that his entire appeal rests on events that happened almost six years ago. No mistake about it, he was everything a leader should be during the aftermath of 9/11. Fearless, compassionate, competent, transparent, present, and effective. Bush had a moment on the pile of ruble, but Rudy walked through the valley with us beginning to end.
But in light of what has happened to this country, I think Rudy's leadership style and terror ideology would further alienate us to the rest of the world (can't lead the world if no one is listening) as well as entrench us deeper in this failed war policy. The reason why Republican's will over look the gay marriage / abortion blemishes is because he is the only real hope conservatives have at salvaging the war on terror policy Bush has screwed up so badly. It's their only hope to save face.
Here is an article from another New Yorker that articulates very clear reasons why Rudy '08 might not be the best idea. Bloomberg on the other hand....that's a "Republipendent" I would vote for in a heartbeat. Even though he is letting Brooklyn look more and more like Manhattan everyday :)
Zeb:
Quick question. Say abortion is made illegal in all fifty states. Are you willing to jail the 17 year old girl who breaks that law?
I would be fairly surprised (and I'm certainly no political whiz) if Rudy gets the Republican nod. I think the reason we're going to see more candidates enter the Republican race is there isn't anyone that the party as a whole feels they can get excited about. I know what the polls show, but in the end, I doubt he gets beyond the primary.
Not to derail the discussion of Giuliani--but here's a link to my comment on another blog discussion re '08 candidates and abortion. There's also a post on Giuliani.

Mr. Wild,
I don't think I like the premise of your question but I'll bite anyway... jail the doctor that commits the so-called said crime and charge the girl as a minor in the same way that you would charge her for shooting someone in the back.
What is your opinion? But be warned! I would probably be considered by some to be "foolish and simplistic" on this issue...:)(pent77@gmail.com)
Joe, sorry for calling your favorite VP candidate of '04 a woman. This obviously hurt your feelings and led you to label me "unabashedly republican"... If I would've known that this would lead to my sterotyping I would've gone ahead and called him downright looney!
Still waiting...
I <3 Huckabee.
:-)
And I HATE negativity.
(Check out Huckabee's interviews with Jon Stewart at Comedy Central's Motherload!)
