hands and feet

I'm pretty pumped about this weekend and next. This weekend I, along with other Christ's Church for Brooklyn friends, will participate in the Step It Up 2007 rally. The rally is an effort to raise awareness of our current climate crisis. The hope is that the rallies all across America will raise the awareness of our politicians. That's all well and good but I'm hoping that my awareness will continue to be heightened by this event. There are simple things one can do to make less of a footprint on this world! I need that challenge in my own life!

Next weekend, several of us from church will walk in the MS Walk which raises money to "provide comprehensive support services, educational programs, and fund a national research initiative into the cause, treatments and cure for this chronic disease." One of our church members has a mother who has MS and one of our members is currently going through the round of tests to determine if she has MS. It hits pretty close to home for us at CCfB. Check out my donation page and give a little so that our team can reach its goal of raising $1000! It would be much appreciated!

We at Christ's Church for Brooklyn call these kind of events our Hands and Feet projects. Our mission statement at church states that we desire to be the hands and feet of Jesus. It seems to us that when Jesus said "for God so loved the world" that he really meant it - that God really does love the whole word. Human and non-human alike! These two events are small declarations of that belief.

That's so cool, Joe (and other CCfB folks). I'll be cheering you all on from a distance. I'm volunteering at an MSWalk tomorrow to support those who are walking.

Joe, the bike rides that my sister does are for the MS Society. While you are participating in the walk, you should check out the rides. If you can do the five burrows. . .surely your next step is an MS150 (grin).

Have fun!

Our oldest son just rode his bike in a race for Diabetes two weeks ago. It was suppose to be for 100 miles and 250 riders had signed up. That Saturday morning there happened to be a terrible thunderstorm in Little Rock. Only about 20 riders showed up and the race officials cut it to 50 miles. By the end of the race there were only 10 riders. Brandon placed 1st in the race. He got a call the next week and his name was drawn to win a new bike!
BTW We have the new "Big Dam Bridge" in Little Rock over the Arkansas River. You need to check it out on the web. It is the longest built for pedestrian use in North America.
Just met a friend of yours last night at a newcomers welcome dinner. Clay Johnson who did some graduate work at Columbia. Small world.

Hey Larry or Teresa, could you send me an e-mail at joe@christschurchforbrooklyn.org. I want to get your info if you don't mind. And congrats to your stud of a son who persevered in the ride! Good work!

Dana, I think I'll have to work a bit harder to make the 150. Holy Cow!

Joe,
Yeah, we consider her a bit of a freak for these crazy long rides, but it's a very cool experience. They do it in two days, and there's this big camp-out and party on the site. A bunch of tired, hungry cyclists get really funny late at night.

Climate crises is right, dude! It's freezing here in your home state! And yo, did VP Gore show up to this awareness thing in his personal gulfstream jet? If so, tell him hello for me.

Also, could you provide some clarity on the whole human and non-human alike comment?

The MS walk sounds cool.

Hey Zeb, I'm so glad that when I get up and preach every Sunday that I'm not held to a standard of perfection just because I speak of Godly things. In the same way, I don't expect Gore to be perfect in his way of living and/or consuming when he gets up and speaks of our climate crisis. Truth is, all Americans are complicit - even the greenest of us. The question becomes, How can we ensure that our footprint not continue to overwhelm the world?

As for your second wish, I mean to say that God loves this world which includes all of His creation - not just humans. Somewhere along the way, we developed an attitude that God only cares for the humans of this world. However, that couldn't be further from the truth biblically speaking. And so we are called to be good stewards of everything, all of creation.

Reminds me what a spokesman for Barbara Streisand said when asked what advice on the Streisand website was being followed by Streisand. "She never meant that it necessarily applied to her."
Liberal rules are only for the little people.

We are having the coldest winter in 113 years.

Chris, I hardly think you want to go in the direction you're going for every politician - red or blue - comes up very empty. For example, the current front runners for the GOP 2008 presidential nom aren't exactly poster boys for family values and good ethics.

And saying this is the coldest winter in 113 years is very short sighted. The trend to track global warming doesn't just measure certain seasons as you declare. Besides, this certainly hasn't been the coldest winter NY has seen in 113. Not by a long shot. Heck, people were wearing shorts and short sleeves back in January!

Wow, I really didn't think people were still denying global warming. I must have been living in New Jersey for too long!

God really does love the whole word. Human and non-human [and posthuman] alike!

Amen!
