Ira Doesn't Eat

Ira's made a lot of progress, no? However, there is one part of his life where he's made almost no progress - eating. Ira eats through a g-tuge which means that food (in his case, Pediasure) goes directly from a pump to a tube inserted into his stomach. The video you are about to see is one of Ira's feeding sessions with his speech/feeding therapist. There are many reasons why Ira can't and won't eat. I won't bore you with the details but this is going to be a long, long journey.

I see there are issues but he's so vocal and responsive to his therapist! I think that's awesome.

Hang in there Ira, I think you are doing great! He uses his napkin well and does such a great job listening! I'm so proud.

Joe and Laura,
I haven't commented in a while, but I'm in grad school w/ Johnna, and we are learning about pediatric feeding this semester. It's so neat to see that video! I know it will be a long road, but just look at what the Lord has done! I'm still constantly praying for your sweet family!

Wow, he looks great!

He looks like he does a better job then John on some aspects. John doesn't wipe his face or even understand what that means. I love that Ira is so vocal and responds so well. That is something we are still working on.

If you were to watch John and I during feeding it is such a struggle. We have to "trick" john into getting something into his mouth and when he does most of the food gets pushed out with his tongue. We figure he gets about 20% of what we put into his mouth, which is good for him.

It is definitly an uphill battle with feeding. I feel for you all! I pray everyday for patience - not yet answered though. :-( I tell Kevin everyday, "I wish I could hire someone to come feed John twice a day."

Keep up the great job!!!!! Kudos!

Joe & Laura,

I'm thrilled to see that he's even tolerating the taste in his mouth. This is such great progress. I know the road ahead looks daunting. My prayer is that someday you will look back on that road and see how very far Ira has come. He's so bright and so beautiful! (What a great therapist, btw!)

Oh my goodness, he is so handsome! His therapist is so good with him, too, it sounds like. Thanks for this glimpse into your lives. Be well.

He is such a good communicator! I worked with kids about his age with a wide range of challenges including feeding tubes, etc., and it is VERY difficult and frustrating at times, but way to go on doing all the right things with him. Great therapist... he really looks like he knows what he's doing. From an outsiders perspective, Ira looks fantastic! Making choices and vocalizing his wants is HUGE! Many prayers for you and your family!

I think Ira is doing great. From your post I would have that he would be doing much less. He is probably not where other kids his age are, but he is certainly doing great. It is wonderful to see him sitting, talking, eating and wiping his mouth. There is a boy that was next to Noah in the NICU and my mom keeps up with his family. I saw some picts of him too recently. It is just great to see your boy. I know that the glimpses we see are not the whole picture, but I think ya'll are doing great.
